Mera and Island Peak Climbing

22 Days 21 Nights

The Mera Peak and Island Peak expedition combined with the Amphu Lapcha Pass is widely regarded as one of Nepal’s ultimate high-altitude mountaineering adventures. The journey kicks off with a short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla before trailing off the beaten path through lush rhododendron forests and quiet villages like Chutanga and Thangnak toward Mera Peak. Reaching the summit of Mera Peak (6,476m) rewards climbers with panoramic vistas of five of the world’s six highest mountains. From there, the route dives east into the rugged, uninhabited wilderness of the remote Hongu Valley, culminating in a technical and exhilarating crossing of the glaciated Amphu Lapcha Pass (5,845m) into the Imja Valley.

Waiting on the other side is Island Peak (Imja Tse, 6,189m), which is lower in elevation than Mera peak presents a sharper technical test with fixed-rope ascents on 45-degree snow slopes and a thrilling knife-edge summit ridge. After clambing both summits and soaking in unforgettable Himalayan views, the descent follows the iconic Everest trail through Pangboche, the spiritual landmark of Tengboche Monastery, and the vibrant hub of Namche Bazaar before looping back to Lukla. Spanning roughly 28 days, this challenging circuit is at its best during the clear, stable weather of spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).
